MARY AND LEDGE HAKES
As Islanders both born and raised, Ledge and Mary are uniquely ensconced in this community. Ledyard B. Hakes IV is part of generations of Hakes who have been part of businesses in this town for 100 years. His father is one of the oldest graduates of Coronado High School still living---at 92 years old.
Ledge, or LB as he is known to his high school friends, is a 1968 alum. After graduation he attended a year at San Diego State University where he continued his wrestling success. While his study interest was history, our country was calling all our young men to the war in Vietnam. He decided to volunteer for service in the Navy Reserve. He served for two years on a “helo” carrier the Iwo Jima as an airman.
After service he married and moved to Atlanta. He started and ran a commercial landscaping company for 17 years. He had three children and upon return to Coronado in 1989, all three went on to graduate from CHS, as did their father. Ledge has served the community with the Coronado Optimist Club since 1998 and was a Coronado School Board Member from 2010 to 2015.
Mary was the last of 6 children. Also born in Coronado, she was baptized, received her reconciliation, first communion and was confirmed in Sacred Heart Parish. She and her mother moved to Pasadena in 1978, where she graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1981. (--although she still celebrates at the famous “CHS All-Year“ reunion every 3rd of July.) She attended the Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising for college and accepted a position in the Bay area, where she lived for the next five years. She moved back to Coronado in 1991.
Ledge and Mary met in 1993 at the Coronado Yacht Club. They were married in 1997. They have a daughter, Mary Erin Hakes. Erin has also received her first sacraments at Sacred Heart and is the fourth generation of Hakes to graduate from CHS, receiving her diploma from her father as a school board member.
Ledge & Mary’s philosophy: Leave the world a better place. (Was that a Beatitude?)
