CARRIE AND DIEGO DEVASCONCELLOS
It was never meant to happen this way.
When Diego and Carrie first met, each one had a specific plan for their future. Diego, working on his MBA with plans to return to his native Brazil and his former job at Taurus International, never meant to stay in San Diego. He just wanted to enjoy the surf while furthering his career. Carrie was completing her courses to become a registered nurse with plans to continue medical education once she was nursing. Each had plans to travel the globe for high adventure.
Well, as the saying goes, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans”!
Their eyes met one fateful evening at sunset on Ocean Beach and like a scene in any perfect romance, a gleam of light flashed from their flirty smiles…. And the rest, they say, is history.
Carrie was charmed by Diego’s cute accent at first, but she advised him to drop the act! Little did she know, that “act” would soon carry her to marriage, three adorable children and frequent visits to Brazil. Little did Diego know that he would soon abandon his plans to return home to his large extended family to eventually become a U.S. citizen working for an international corporation.
Although growing up hemispheres apart, they shared a few things in common. They both were raised Catholic and found this quickly brought them closer together. They both love the beach and travel and can’t sit still for long before having to bust outside to play in the sun.
They planned on travel for their first years of marriage. But, once again, God just laughed. First one, then two…now three babies later, Carrie and Diego have traded their dreams of adventure abroad to navigate the perilous terrain of parenting. Exotic Brazilian churassco bbq’s and musical “family fun band” are their weekend explorations now with liberal sprinkling of family surf, beach and outdoor play right here in Coronado.
So when asked to dance, saying “yes” to uncharted terrain is nothing new to these two and seemed only natural.
After all, Carrie did attend Sacred Heart herself and has fond memories of being Mrs. Nordlie’s favorite student! Oh wait! It’s other way around. Mrs. Nordlie is Carrie’s favorite teacher. And Gianna, 1st grade daughter, is Mrs. Luna’s favorite student...err, Gianna loves Mrs. Luna! And Diego has music and dancing in his Brazilian blood. And dancing supports Sacred Heart. And dance lessons will permit scheduled date nights. And the kids will love it.
And you never know what God has planned!
Diego and Carrie will Samba on to yet another adventure – win or lose!
